Spokane Valley, WA Real Estate, Spokane Valley Area and Community Information

Spokane Valley, Washington, is a city of about 90,000 residents located to the east of Spokane. Locals often refer to the community as simply “The Valley.”

History
The Spokane Valley is rich with History. For many centuries, the Upper Band of the Interior Salish Indians inhabited this area. Their diet was supplemented by the wild game, salmon, carnassia root and berries found in the area. The first settler of European descent to permanently live here was a retired trapper named Antoine Plante who built his cabin by the Spokane River in 1849. He and his family ran a trading post there.

The following year, Plante built a ferry that offered the only means for crossing the Spokane River at the time. A bridge followed in the 1860s, and the post office arrived in 1867. Mining grew in importance in the latter part of the century, and irrigation gave rise to agriculture in the early 20th century. Soon, millions of apple trees grew across the valley. The completion of the Grand Coulee Dam in 1941 provided low-cost electricity which in turn spurred industry in the area.
